'A really engaging day - the children loved it and produced some really high quality art work! Thank you so much Emily!' Sinead Costello, Teacher, Fleet Primary School, Hampstead.

These popular comics and illustration workshops encourage reading for pleasure and concentration, teach art skills and develop the imagination. The age range is from reception to teen, and the sessions are suitable for schools, SEND settings and other arts & cultural settings.

Comics Workshops (up to 30 children)

Themes: Space, Create Your Own Hero, Myths and Legends, Ancient Greece/Egypt/Rome, Kings & Queens, Tudors, Stone Age, Chinese New Year, India, Aztecs, Dragons, Aesop’s Fables, Fairy Tales, Diary, Fashion/Costume, Black History Month, World Book Day, Non-fiction November and the Arts Award.

We look at examples of comics and graphic novels.

The group learn to draw a character step-by-step following my example.

I take them through the fundamentals of character creation on a PowerPoint, then they create original characters.

After more discussion we create comic strips.

I offer support, encouragement and tips throughout the session.

Comics Workshops (suitable for larger groups)

Using a PowerPoint presentation I show the children how I create characters, from rough sketch to finished artwork.

We look at a variety of graphic novels.

I take them through the fundamentals of character creation and they create original characters.

After more discussion we create comic strips.

I offer support, encouragement and tips throughout the session.

Picture Book Workshops (suitable for larger groups)

These can be based on a picture book the group are already studying.

Using a PowerPoint presentation I show the children how I create picture books, from storyboard to rough drawings to finished page.

We look at picture book examples to demonstrate simplicity of text and line, and fun use of the picture book format.

We brainstorm for ideas then create original characters.

After more discussion we create a picture book storyboard.

As an option the group can start work on a picture book with a pre-made template.

I offer support, encouragement and tips throughout the session.

Fees vary depending on how many workshops are booked during a day and the distance I will need to travel. I include a printable 'learn to draw' activity sheet to use as you wish and a tip sheet for teachers to support pupils with creating comics. Sessions usually last 1 hr – 1 hr 30 mins.
